GLOSSARY

Backset : this term is used to explain the
distance from the edge of the door to the center of the hole
drilled for the knob, lever or deadbolt.
Bifold door : A door unit that consists of
either one or two pairs of doors that fold in half to open
Bore : it is the diameter of the hole drilled
in a door for a knob, lever or deadbolt.
Bypassing doors : A door assembly that consist
of two or more doors that slide on a track
Casing : The trim round a door that covers
the gap between the jamb and the surrounding wall.
Deadbolts : Locking mechanism for an entrance
door or other door, in which a bolt moves with a turn of a
key into a jamb. Deadbolts can be a single cylinder our double
cylinder. With a single cylinder deadbolt, a key is used on
one side, and is turned by hand on the other side. With a
single cylinder deadbolt, a key is used on both sides.
Door handing : it's easy to figure out how
a door should swing by using a floor plan of the building.
Door viewer : Item that is inserted into
a hole drilled into the face of the door.
Dummy pairs are for doors where no latches
are needed. These knobs or levers do not turn. They can be
split up for bi-fold door set, since no hardware is needed
on back of the bi-folds.
Finish opening : The dimensions from finished
jamb in width, and from finished jam to finish floor in height.
Flush bolts : Bolts mounted in a door to
lock a door in place. These bolts slide up into the jamb above
the door, and down into the threshold or floor below door.
They are used primarily on double doors, where one door is
locked in place and the other door is the one mainly used.
When needed, the door locked in place can be opened. Flush
bolts can also be called slidebolts, which are mounted to
the face of the door. Fluch bolts are mounted flush with the
edge of the door.
Jamb : the wood that surrounds the door,
and which the hinges are attached to on one side, and whtch
the latch goes into on the other side of the door.
Keyways : the part of the lock mechanism
where the key is inserted. Can be changed if needed for security
reasons, or changed also if wanted for ease of use, where
more than on lock is in existence, and you want all the locks
the same key.
Knobs : round part of door handle that you
hold with your hand. This can be made of brass, porcelain,
steel, glass or other products.
Latch : the latch is the part of the door
hardware that moves with the turn of a knob or lever. It slides
into the latch plate attached to the door jamb, and holds
the door shut or pens it.
Lever : A lever has the same function as
a knob, except it is longer and thinner. To open a door, levers
are pushed down.
Pocket door : A door that rolls on a track
inside the wall.
Prehung : a door that is sold already installed
in a jamb.
Rosette : plate behind lever or knobs that
holds the lever or knob in place
Strike plate : Plate attached to door jamb,
which receives the latch, when the knob or lever is turned,
allows the door to be closed or opened.
As a rule, exterior doors should always swing into the building.
Most interior doors swing into the room, unless the room is
small, such as a closet or furnace room. Doors that swing
out into traffic areas are dangerous.
Whether a door swings right or left depends on the traffic
flow. the door should swing away from traffic. If a wall is
nearby, swing the door to the wall. When you specify door
handing, you can view the door from outside.
If the door swings in, it may be a right hand or a left hand
door. If it swings out, it can be either a left hand reverse
or a a right hand reverse swing.
To figure out the swing, imagine yourself standing in front
of the door, outside the room or building. If the door swings
in and opens to the left, it's a left hand swing ( it's a
left hand reverse if it opens out). If it swings to the right,
it's a right hand ( or right hand reverse) swing.Pairs of
doors work the same, except that you also need to distinguish
betwwen the active door ( the one with the lockset) and the
incative door ( the one fastened at the top and bottom by
flush bolts or slidebolts).
